Sometimes, the first step is the hardest. That’s often true of the decision for a family member to move to an assisted living facility. Though many families are rushed into this decision due to emergency circumstances, others have time to discuss it and make plans. In a recent article in the New York Times, social worker Debra Drelich has some advice for people having “the conversation” with their aging parents who may not be ready emotionally to make the move to assisted living. Here are some of her tips:
- Ask others to help you talk to your loved one, such as physician, a clergyman or other family members
- Reassure older loved ones that a move can be a gradual process.
- Make the focus of the conversation for “future planning,” not immediate action
- Recognize that no one wants to give up her or his independence
- Try to find common ground through “what if” scenarios
Assisted Living Options in Arlington
In 2008, I was faced with the issue of finding specialized care for my mother when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. With so many assisted living facilities in the Arlington area, it took a lot of research and investigation of my own to find the right place. That experience inspired me to create a FREE service to help other families just like I helped Tom and his family, below. Contact me today to get your free guide.
I wanted to take a minute and say a very big THANK YOU! With all of the Senior Living choices available in the DFW and Arlington areas for assisted living we were beyond overwhelmed. One phone call to you and I knew we had the help that we needed.
You spent so much time (some after hours!!) to interview the family member and find out what we needed. After a fact finding interview you gave us several great Arlington Assisted Living choices that would be appropriate. It made the process so much easier to narrow down the perfect place. Our family member needed a specialized place as he was only 51 years old and battling Parkinson’s disease. We need to find a Dallas Parkinson’s Assisted Living Facility that would be able to provide enough personal attention. We were able to tour the Dallas Assisted Living Facilities that you suggested and in a few short days able to select the right one! You made what was a very overwhelming process easy and seamless. I HIGHLY recommend you and Senior Living Specialists!!!! Thank you so much for your caring, knowledge and guidance! You are THE BEST!
