Cost of Assisted Living Care in Dallas-Fort Worth

Assisted living communities have become a very popular type of housing option for older adults in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Older adults often say they feel as if they have found an ideal solution when they need a little extra help to maintain their independence. They have the privacy of their own apartment or suite with the care and support of experienced caregivers nearby when needed.

Another positive for these types of senior living communities is that they are significantly less expensive than a traditional nursing home. The cost of assisted living care in north Texas ranges from $1,400 to $16,595 each month. The median is $8,998. That means a senior and their family should expect to pay about $107,976 a year for a studio or one bedroom apartment in a Dallas assisted living community.

Because some communities utilize a flat fee structure where all residents pay the same rate, while others charge a basic rate with level of care charges individually assessed, it can be very confusing to compare “apples to apples.” We educate the older adults and families we work with to be sure they fully understand the pricing structure of each individual assisted living community they are considering.

Paying for Assisted Living Care in North Texas

Assisted living is typically paid for from a senior’s private resources. In some cases, however, a senior may qualify for financial support. A few options we can help you explore include:

  • If your senior family member was a veteran or is the surviving spouse of a veteran, they may be eligible for the Veteran’s Aid & Attendance benefit. We can explain this benefit to you in more detail when we meet.
  • Many long-term care insurance policies also help cover the costs of a licensed assisted living community. Talk with the policy provider for more information.
  • Some states, including Texas, have recently started allocating Medicaid funding for assisted living care. It is referred to as a Medicaid waiver. The challenge is often finding a community that will accept that form of payment. The Texas Assisted Living Association’s consumer support department may be able to help. You can reach them at (512) 653-6604. Or you can call the Texas Medicaid office directly and request a referral to an assisted living community that participates in the Medicaid waiver program. You can call them at (877) 541-7905.
