A family can spend weeks researching assisted living in Dallas without realizing there may be help available for the problems happening at home right now. An older parent might need reliable meals, a caregiver might need a break, or someone might need help understanding benefits before the family can make a realistic care plan.
These needs lead to different organizations. Knowing where to begin can spare you several rounds of phone calls, especially when your loved one lives in a different county from you.
The Dallas Area Agency on Aging, a program of the Community Council of Greater Dallas, connects older adults and caregivers with services throughout Dallas County. Its programs include benefits counseling, caregiver support, nutrition services and other aging resources. If you are unsure which kind of assistance to request, describe the situation rather than trying to name a program yourself.

For example, you might explain that your father lives alone, has stopped preparing meals and relies on you for every appointment. That gives the agency a clearer picture than simply asking whether it offers senior services. Ask about eligibility, the application process and whether there is a wait for assistance.
Families in Collin, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman, Rockwall and other counties served by the North Central Texas Area Agency on Aging should contact that agency instead. Its caregiver programs include support coordination, education, counseling and respite. Dallas and Tarrant counties have separate aging agencies, so a Dallas mailing address or a nearby city name should not be your only guide. Use the Texas Health and Human Services agency directory to check the county involved.
The Dallas County Aging and Disability Resource Center offers information and options counseling about services and supports. It can be a useful starting point when a family knows something needs to change but is unsure whether to ask about assistance at home, disability resources or another kind of support.
Before contacting the center, write down the immediate difficulty. Perhaps your mother cannot manage the steps outside her house, or your spouse needs more supervision than you can provide while working. Include the person’s ZIP code and the help already in place. You do not need a polished explanation to ask for direction.
The Senior Source in Dallas offers a Family Caregiver Support program with education for people caring for an aging loved one. It is worth contacting when you need guidance about caregiving responsibilities or want to learn what support is currently available.
Respite is another term worth knowing. It means temporary relief from caregiving duties, and the North Central Texas Area Agency on Aging includes respite among its caregiver services. Eligibility and available assistance vary, so ask what applies to your situation. A break does not have to wait until you are exhausted enough to cancel work or neglect your own appointments.
VNA Meals on Wheels serves eligible Dallas County residents who cannot obtain or prepare meals because of illness, advanced age or disability. Applications are available through VNA Texas. Families outside Dallas County should locate the provider serving their loved one’s address rather than assume one organization covers the entire Metroplex.
A meal program may address one important gap in a plan for remaining at home. Consider the other gaps separately: who handles groceries, evening meals, weekends and help getting to the door? Meal delivery should not be treated as a substitute for the supervision or personal assistance someone needs.
The Alzheimer’s Association has a free helpline at 800.272.3900, available around the clock. Families can ask about dementia concerns, caregiving challenges and connections to resources. You do not need to save every question for the next support group meeting.
For concerns about a resident’s care or rights in a Dallas County nursing home or assisted living facility, The Senior Source provides local Long Term Care Ombudsman services. An ombudsman helps residents address concerns and understand their rights. This is a different resource from a placement advisor and can be useful after someone has already moved.
Choose the problem creating the most difficulty this week and start there. Ask who qualifies, whether there is a cost, what paperwork is needed and whom to contact if that program cannot help. Keep the name of the person you speak with and any referral they provide.
Some families need several kinds of support before considering a move. If residential care becomes part of that discussion, Senior Living Specialists can help you compare Dallas Fort Worth senior living options alongside the resources already supporting your loved one.
