Memory Care Beginner’s Guide for Flower Mound

When a member of the family is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or a related form of dementia, the whole family is impacted. Just ask the Senior Living Specialists founder, Paul Markowitz. At the young age of 59, his mother received this devastating diagnosis.

The family’s struggle to find a quality memory care program in north Texas led him to start the company. To date, he and his team of local senior care advisors have helped over 2,000 families find senior care.

Finding The Right Memory Care Community

There are over 40 memory care programs to choose from in Flower Mound and Denton County, Texas. Here’s a little more information to help you better understand how memory care is different than traditional assisted living.
Residents in a memory care community benefit from having a program dedicated to meeting their unique needs including:

    • Environment: The physical plant of a memory care community is designed to keep residents safe and supported. One important feature of the program is security. This means there are alarms in place on windows and doors to alert staff if a resident attempts to wander. The environment also includes supportive measures such as color coded hallways to make it easier for people with memory loss to find their way around and signs with visual images in lieu of text.
    • Dedicated Training: Caring for a person with dementia is different than caring for older adults with other types of health conditions. Caregiving teams who work in memory care programs receive specialized training to help them learn how to support and communicate with people who have memory loss. This includes managing agitation, aggression and wandering.
    • Dining Program: Creating a dining program that supports people with dementia requires employing a variety of best practices. Adaptive silverware and finger foods are known to be helpful. Aromatherapy is also used to stimulate appetite in people with dementia. And having caregivers nearby to provide assistance throughout meal times helps adults with Alzheimer’s maintain a healthy diet and avoid unintended weight loss.
    • Productive Days: Life enrichment activities in a memory care program are developed to work with a resident’s remaining abilities. Wellness activities range from stretching and resistance training to other senior-friendly forms of exercise like chair yoga. Art therapy, music and reminiscence activities also help residents with dementia feel connected. Using this approach allows residents to feel as if they have had a successful day.

Families should expect to pay between $3,500 a month up to $7,000 for a memory care program in the Flower Mound area.

Easy Access for Family Visitors and Health Care Access

Flower Mound is located in an area of north Texas referred to as the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is just a few miles away. This makes it easy for long distance caregivers to visit often. Several major highways also connect the city including U.S. Route 377, Interstate 35W and Interstate 35E.
This access makes it easier to reach hospitals and medical centers in the event of a medical emergency. Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, Flower Mound Urgent Care and Continuum Rehabilitation Hospital are all close by.
